King Black Dragon Guide

Bosses guide · Updated September 2025

The King Black Dragon is the original boss - the three-headed dragon at 3005, 3850 that has been the wilderness staple since classic. He is the most beginner-friendly real boss on the teleport list: predictable attacks, a clean lair, and a drop table built for learning the game.

The dragon pickaxe and draconic visage are the big drops; the dragon med helm and KBD heads fill out the collection log.

The fight

KBD attacks with dragonfire bolts - the standard anti-dragonfire combo of a dragonfire shield plus antifires blocks most of it. He also melees in range, so protect-from-melee while you pray-switch for the fire balls.

The fight is simple: three heads cycle through attack types, you prayer-flick between them, and he dies cleanly. It is the boss you learn dragonfire mechanics on before Vorkath.

Getting there and back

The lair is one-room - no labyrinth, no adds to fight through. Teleport in, fight, loot, teleport out. The wilderness approach is what carries the risk, not the boss itself.

The drops

Dragon pickaxe, draconic visage, dragon med helm, KBD heads, the prince black dragon pet - plus the volume supplies that make it a reliable early farm. Every tradeable drop is GE-linked below.

First-boss progression

KBD is where most players learn the boss rhythm: prayer overhead up, dragonfire coverage on, watch the attack animations, bank the loot. The skills transfer directly to every dragon boss above him - Vorkath is the same fight at four times the complexity.

He is also the collection-log entry every account wants early: the KBD heads mount in a player-owned house and the prince black dragon pet is a classic flex.

  • Rune or dragon weapon is enough - he has no special defence.
  • Anti-dragonfire shield plus antifires is the standard combo.
  • Leave one inventory slot for the heads if you want the mount.

What a KBD trip looks like

Teleport in, pray melee, let the dragonfire shield soak the breath, and click through the three heads. A kill takes two to four minutes with mid-tier gear. Bank the loot, teleport out, repeat - the loop is tight enough that an hour of KBD is a dozen kills and a real chance at the pickaxe or visage.

It is the training wheels boss: everything he teaches - overhead coverage, dragonfire mitigation, banking between kills - is the exact skillset Vorkath and the raids demand at harder difficulty.

Gear that pays off

A ranged setup with a rune crossbow is the clean method - you stay out of melee range, the dragonfire shield handles the breath, and the kill is all clicking. Melee works but eats more food against his melee swings.

The anti-dragon shield plus antifire potion combo is what separates a safe kill from a risky one - the breath hits 50+ unprotected, which ends fights fast.

Session summary

The classic first real boss - learn the dragonfire mechanics here and every dragon after gets easier. The pickaxe, visage, heads, and pet are all real rolls on an honest table.
