Woodcutting Guide
Skills guide · Updated September 2025
Woodcutting supplies fletching, firemaking, construction, and farming - the logs behind half the skilling economy. The tree table covers thirteen species from normal trees to redwood, with per-species difficulty, XP, respawn, and stump objects verified against the map.
Trees fall on a ~1-in-11 roll per log (except single-log species), so a busy grove always has something to chop.
Axes and the chop roll
Hatchet.find picks the best axe you can wield across weapon and inventory - bronze through dragon, plus the infernal axe. Each axe adds points to the per-tick success formula, capped at 95%.
The infernal axe incinerates a third of your logs on the spot - you lose the log but gain the firemaking XP for it. The dragon axe special "Lumber Up" (full spec bar) adds +3 Woodcutting for 200 ticks and a 50% chance at a bonus log per chop; the infernal version guarantees incinerate and +10% XP.
Tree progression
| Level | Tree | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Normal | Everywhere; the starting grove |
| 15 | Oak | First upgrade tier |
| 30 | Willow | The reliable mid-game bulk |
| 35 | Teak | Fast XP if you have access |
| 45 | Maple | Fletcher feedstock |
| 50 | Mahogany | Slower but pays |
| 60 | Yew | The classic AFK money |
| 75 | Magic | Top regular tree |
| 90 | Redwood | Guild-only, best XP |
The Woodcutting Guild
The guild at Hosidius (level 60 gates west and east) is the end-game venue: +7 effective Woodcutting inside the boost boundaries, the ent dungeon underneath, the redwood climb for level 90s, and an egg shrine that converts a bird egg into a seed nest plus 100 prayer XP.
Guildmaster Lars is spawned inside at 1650, 3499 - his greeting plays on entry.
Bird nests and the beaver
Every log has a 1-in-200 shot at a bird nest - donator tiers improve it to 1/190, 1/180, 1/170, and the woodcutting/max cape cuts the denominator by a further 10%. Nests spawn owner-only on the ground: egg nests hold eggs, seed nests hold tree seeds up to spirit, ring nests hold gold-to-diamond rings, and clue nests hold tiered clue scrolls. Redwood drops clue nests only.
The beaver pet rolls per chop at each tree's own odds.
Woodcutting cape perk
Beyond the nest-rate bonus above, the woodcutting skillcape is the badge - the +8 defensive stats it carries are the reason to wear it past 99.
The tree tiers
Logs scale in a clean ladder: normal, oak, willow, maple, yew, magic, redwood. Yew and magic are the money tiers - fletchers and firemakers buy them by the thousand, and the GE always has demand.
The dragon axe is the upgrade that matters - the special attack boosts your level for faster chops, and it is a permanent tool worth buying early.
Session summary
A simple, honest skill: chop the highest tree you can, bank or burn the logs, and upgrade the axe whenever one drops. The GE always wants what you are holding.
The beaver pet
The beaver skilling pet rolls on any log chop - a random pet chance while you train, and one of the nicer surprises mid-grind. Redwood trees at 90 are the end-game AFK spot.
