Defence Training Guide
Skills guide · Updated September 2025
Defence is the quiet stat that decides fights. It controls which armour tiers you can wear and how often incoming damage splashes - and on a server where a losing faction wipes its bank, surviving the fight is the whole game.
Train it with the defensive attack style on any melee weapon, or use controlled to split XP between Attack, Strength, Defence, and Hitpoints.
Why defence matters here
Open-world faction PvP means damage arrives from players, not just monsters. Enemy PKers spec-trade godswords and dark bows - higher Defence turns a chunk of those spec rolls into zeros. It also gates Barrows armour, Bandos chestplate, and the other defensive sets you will rely on at control points.
The pragmatic level most players target is 70–80: enough for Barrows gear and Bandos, reachable without dedicating training time to it.
Training methods
Pure Defence XP comes fastest in the Nightmare Zone: defensive style on a whip or staff, absorption pots up, and rumble bosses thudding harmlessly into your shield. It trains at the same tick rate as Attack or Strength - the only difference is which style you have selected.
Slayer covers it passively: controlled style splits XP across four stats, which is the natural way to level Defence on task without thinking about it. If you are doing Slayer anyway, Defence climbs for free.
A third route is tanky slayer tasks against bosses - Cerberus, Vorkath, God Wars generals - where the defensive style keeps you alive longer between food and still pays XP on every hit you land.
- Defensive style = pure Defence XP; controlled = 4-way split.
- Barrows sets (Dharok, Torag, Verac) all need 70 Defence - plan to hit it.
- Armadyl godsword tanks appreciate Defence levels more than second BCP.
Armour tiers to aim for
| Defence level | What it unlocks | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | Rune platebody and kiteshield | GE or mid-tier drops |
| 60 | Dragon med helm, dragon sq shield | KBD and mid-boss drops |
| 65 | Bandos tassets first milestone | General Graardor, GWD |
| 70 | Bandos chestplate, Barrows armour | GWD, Barrows brothers |
| 75+ | Elysian/arcane spirit shields, ancestral | Corporeal Beast, CoX |
Defence cape perk
The defence skillcape is the tank perk of the bunch: when a hit would drop you below 10% HP, the cape can save you with a teleport to safety (2026, 3576) - a free resurrection for anyone wearing it. Toggle it on or off from the cape's options, and any max-cape variant inherits the save.
The tank math
Defence raises your chance to be missed - every level lowers incoming hit frequency across all three styles. It is the invisible stat: nobody sees defence working, but a 20-level gap is the difference between a KO and a survivable combo.
On a PvP server defence is the anti-rushing stat: a high-defence account shrugs off the pure-style one-tick kills that end low-defence fights.
The armour unlock ladder
Defence is the gear-gate stat: rune at 40, dragon at 60, barrows at 70, crystal and bandos-tier at the top. Every ten levels is a new armour tier you could not wear before.
For PvM, defence is the insurance that makes trips cheaper - fewer hits taken means less food eaten means longer trips between banks.
