Hitpoints Training Guide

Skills guide · Updated September 2025

Hitpoints is the only combat stat that is also your life meter. Every account starts at level 10 - the 1,184 XP of a fresh bar - and every point you add to it is one more hit the enemy has to land before you die.

On a faction-war server, Hitpoints is arguably the most important combat stat: it is the buffer that absorbs a godsword spec, the margin that lets you eat a shark before the PKer's next swing, and the deciding factor in who teleports out alive.

How HP actually trains

You do not train Hitpoints directly - it gains a slice of every combat XP drop. Each point of melee, ranged, or magic damage you deal trickles Hitpoints XP into the skill automatically. Level it by training other combat stats and HP follows behind at roughly one-third the rate.

The practical result: you never grind Hitpoints on its own. Grind Attack or Strength, and Hitpoints climbs as a side effect.

Milestones that matter

Because HP trains passively, most players reach 80+ around the time their combat stats hit the 90s. There is no rush - it arrives by itself.

  • 50 HP - sharks heal more than most hits you take at low level.
  • 70 HP - enough buffer to survive a single AGS spec with food left over.
  • 80 HP - the comfortable range for control-point fights.
  • 99 HP - a second chance on almost every spec; what PKers fear most.

Hitpoints cape perk

The constitution (hitpoints) skillcape doubles your natural hitpoint regeneration - the slow heal that ticks back when you are not in combat. Any max-cape variant gets the same boost.

It sounds modest until you are regrouping between control-point fights: doubled natural restore means less food burned standing in a safe zone waiting to re-engage.

Survival tips that pair with HP

  • Sharks heal 20 - the standard control-point food and a constant GE staple.
  • Saradomin brews heal over max HP - carry them for boss rooms.
  • Anglerfish from the fishing guild overheal; keep a stack for PvP.
  • Pair the defence cape save with high HP for a genuinely hard kill.

Why hitpoints is the real combat level

Hitpoints trains passively with every other combat skill - every point of damage you deal adds a fraction of HP XP. It is the one stat that levels itself while you train attack, strength, defence, ranged, or magic.

High HP is also the only combat stat that directly scales survivability: more HP means more hits survived, which is the whole game in PvP.

Training it on purpose

  • It levels passively - no dedicated grind needed.
  • Long, low-risk fights (nightmare zone, slayer tasks) pile it up fastest.
  • The rock cake at NMZ keeps you at 1 HP for the absorption trick.

The 10-level start

Every account starts at 10 hitpoints - the baseline that scales with the constitution-like formula. It is the only stat you cannot avoid training, which is why it ends up most players' highest combat level by accident.

The skilling hitpoints matter too: rock-dropping at NMZ, eat-down strategies, and the damage you take in PvM all run on the same pool.
