Barrows Guide

Minigames guide · Updated September 2025

Barrows is the haunted mounds minigame - six brothers buried under six mounds in Morytania, each guarding a piece of the iconic armour sets. The minigame teleport lands at 3565, 3313 beside the mounds; dig on a mound to enter a brother's crypt.

It is the foundational mid-tier farm: barrows armour is the first real defensive set most players buy, and the chests pay out runes, bolt racks, and key halves alongside the uniques.

The six brothers

Dharok the WretchedMeleeHelm, platebody, platelegs, greataxe
Guthan the InfestedMeleeHelm, platebody, chainskirt, warspear
Karil the TaintedRangedCoif, leathertop, leatherskirt, crossbow
Torag the CorruptedMeleeHelm, platebody, platelegs, hammers
Verac the DefiledMeleeHelm, brassard, plateskirt, flail

How a run works

Dig on a mound to drop into a brother's crypt - kill him, climb out, repeat. Five brothers have their own crypts; the sixth waits in the tunnels beneath, whose door unlocks once you have killed enough brothers.

The puzzle is the tunnels: find your way to the reward chest, open it, and the loot rolls scale with how many brothers you actually killed. Kill all six for the best chance at set pieces.

The loot formula

Each brother killed rolls a reward slot: the barrows chance is 1/(450 - 58 x brothersKilled) - so one brother gives 1/392 odds per slot, six brothers give 1/102. Killing every brother is the single biggest lever on your piece odds.

The rest of the chest fills with scaled misc: mind runes up to 3000, chaos to 1000, death to 600, blood to 300, bolt racks to 300, and coins up to 250k - plus the misc uniques (key halves, dragon med, elite clue) rolled separately.

Practical farming

  • Kill all six - the piece odds jump with every brother.
  • Prayer protection makes the brothers trivial; restore between mounds.
  • The tunnels are random - mark your path or bring a spade for shortcuts.
  • Set pieces sell on the GE - price a full set before you decide to keep or sell.

The set effects

Full barrows sets are more than armour: Dharok's hits harder the lower your health, Guthan's heals on hit, Karil's reduces opponent agility, Verac's pierces prayer, Ahrim's drains strength, Torag's drains run energy. The set effects are why a completed set sells for multiples of the piece sum on the GE.

Common mistakes

  • Looting the chest with fewer than six brothers - the odds scale per kill.
  • Letting prayer drop in the tunnels - a surprise brother hits hard.
  • Bringing too little food for the maze wandering.

When to stop digging

The chest loot only rolls once per run - five brothers or six, the roll happens on chest open. Killing all six is always optimal for piece odds; anything less is trading drop chance for speed.

The tunnels are randomized per session, so learning the fixed map is wasted effort - learn the puzzle pattern instead and every run is a quick solve.
