Fight Caves Guide

Minigames guide · Updated September 2025

The Fight Caves are the 63-wave survival gauntlet in the TzHaar volcano - the single most iconic endurance test in OSRS and the source of the fire cape. The minigame teleport lands at 2439, 5171 inside the cave entrance.

Every wave spawns a fresh pack of TzHaar monsters; die and you restart, survive to wave 63 and you face TzTok-Jad himself.

The wave structure

Waves decompose a wave number into monsters by cost - Ket-Zek at 31 points, Yt-MejKot at 15, Tok-Xil at 7, Tz-Kek at 3, Tz-Kih at 1 - so each wave is a mathematically generated pack, not a scripted list. The next wave only spawns once every current monster is dead.

The practice mode option exists for learners - same waves, no cape on success, no death penalty on failure. Use it.

TzTok-Jad

Jad is the exam: a level 702 boss who fires a magic ball and a ranged ball - one pray each, and the flick must be timed off his tell. Below half health he summons Yt-HurKot healers that restore his HP; kill or off-tank them before they out-heal your damage.

Kill him and the fire cape drops plus a tokkul bonus; fall short and you still walk out with the tokkul you earned - a consolation that makes practice runs pay.

The wave resume

Log out mid-run and your progress is banked - the game remembers which wave you were on and resumes there on your next login. Practice runs end outright, but the real run persists through disconnects and reboots.

What to bring

  • Ranged setup - the distance control is the whole fight.
  • Restore + food for 63 waves of chip damage.
  • Prayer potions; you will flick dozens of times before Jad.
  • Patience - a first clear takes 45-90 minutes.

Reading Jad

Jad telegraphs his two attacks: he rears up on his hind legs for magic, stays low for ranged. The prayer swap is a one-tick flick - learn the tell and the fight is mechanical; panic and it is a coin flip on every ball.

The healers at half health are the second exam. Kill or off-tank them in order of proximity - a Jad at 10% with three healers alive is still a loss.

  • Practice mode exists - use it before a real run.
  • The wave resume means a disconnect is not a restart.
  • Tz-Kih drains prayer on hit; kill them early.

The cape

The fire cape is the mid-game power spike: the melee cape before the infernal, and the only way to get one is the 63-wave run. It is the gear check that separates players who boss seriously from players who do not.

Wave-order discipline

Each wave lists its monsters by point-cost - kill the high-cost ones first and the wave shortens quickly. The Tz-Kih prayer-drainers are the exception: kill them first regardless of cost, because a drained prayer ends runs quietly.

The next wave only spawns when the last monster dies - so a smart player kills the weakest monster last, using the pause to restock prayer before the next pack lands.
