Prayer Training Guide

Skills guide · Updated September 2025

Prayer is the skill that keeps you alive - protection prayers alone decide most fights on a PvP server, and getting to Rigour and Augury at 74/77 is a rite of passage for any account that intends to fight.

It trains two ways: bury bones, or offer bones to an altar. The altar route is faster per bone and there are three ways to do it - the standard altar, the wilderness chaos altar, or your own house altar.

Bones and altar offering

Every buriable bone in the game gives XP - normal bones at the base rate, dragon and wyvern bones at multiples, ensouled heads and demonic ashes at their own rates. Right-click a bone to bury it; the fractional XP between levels accumulates automatically.

Offering to an altar pays 1.5x the bone's base XP - the animation plays (3705, the altar-offering anim), the altar glows, and the loop continues while bones remain. The standard altar object works, and a player-owned-house gilded altar in a Construction-built chapel is the best long-term option because it keeps the same multiplier on your own schedule.

The wilderness chaos altar

In deep wilderness there is a chaos altar where bone offerings trigger a chance for the Dark Lord to spare the bone - you get the XP but keep the bone. The spare chance starts at 50% and halves each time it triggers consecutively, resetting when a bone is consumed. That means the effective cost per XP drops dramatically over a session.

The trade is the risk: it is in deep wilderness, so bring nothing you cannot lose, bank your bones in a looting bag as you go, and expect a PKer to check the altar at some point during your grind.

Elder Chaos Druid un-noting

The Elder Chaos Druid at 3236, 3636 - the same wilderness spot as his boss-teleport row - un-notes banknoted bones for 50 coins each. This is the loop that makes wilderness bone-running viable: you bring a stack of noted dragon bones, un-note 27 at a time, offer to the chaos altar, bank the spare bones, repeat.

It is also a reminder that wilderness utilities extend beyond PvP. The 50-coin fee is the real OSRS rate, kept deliberately.

  • Bring a looting bag to secure bones between offerings.
  • The chaos altar spare chance is the best XP-per-bone in the game.
  • A PKer check is a matter of when, not if - bank often.

Prayer-boosting gear and perks

A dragonbone necklace restores prayer points when you bury bones - 1 to 5 points back per bone depending on tier - so burying on the move stays useful long after you outgrow the XP. Combine it with a bonecrusher and you get the bonecrusher necklace, which keeps the restore and auto-buries what you kill.

The prayer skillcape does not have a perk - its benefit is passive glory. The real late-game unlocks are the protection prayers at 43/60s, Rigour and Augury at 74/77, and Preserve at 55 for boosted-stat extension.
