Firemaking Guide
Skills guide · Updated September 2025
Firemaking is the simplest skill to train and one of the most satisfying to finish - tinderbox on log, watch it burn, move to the next tile. Seventeen log types feed it: the standard woods plus five colored variants and the CoX kindling.
Each log has its own level requirement, XP (including fractional values that accumulate), fire object, and lifespan in ticks - a willow fire burns about 200 ticks, a magic fire closer to 600.
Burning logs
Use a tinderbox on a log in your inventory or lying on the ground - the fire spawns under you, you step off it, and it burns down to ashes on its own timer. A per-tick success roll scales with level over requirement; failed attempts replay the animation.
You cannot light a fire under a roof or on a tile already holding a solid object, so pick a clear lane and drag a line of fires down it. Chain-lighting - clicking the next log while the current one burns - adds the one-tick start delay.
Colored logs and barbarian lighting
Firelighters (red, green, blue, purple, white) convert regular logs into colored variants - 50 XP per conversion and a matching colored fire when you burn it. It is a small but real XP bonus layered on top of normal burning.
Barbarian firemaking substitutes a bow for the tinderbox at +20 levels over the log's requirement - fourteen bows and the Seercull all work, each playing its own lighting animation. It is the stylish way to burn yews in front of the GE.
Bonfires and Wintertodt
Adding logs to an existing fire - any player-lit fire or world bonfire, matched by definition name - opens the make-x bonfire menu for the shared-XP version of the grind.
The Wintertodt (minigame teleport 10, 1630, 3958) is the dedicated firemaking boss: feed the braziers, keep the pyromancers alive, and earn supply crates that scale with your skill levels. It is the best firemaking content on the server for anyone past level 50.
Pyromancer outfit and perks
The pyromancer set from Wintertodt crates adds +0.4% XP on the hood, +0.8% garb, +0.6% robe, +0.2% boots, plus a +0.5% set bonus - 2.5% total, small but free for a grind you are doing anyway.
- The firemaking cape has no active perk - the warmth is sentimental.
- Colored fires + bonfire sharing are the social way to burn.
Beyond the bonfires
At 50 firemaking the Wintertodt opens up - the skilling boss in the frozen north that pays out in supply crates, the pyromancer outfit, and the bruma torch. It is the fastest firemaking XP in the game and the only firemaking content that drops real loot.
The todt is a team fight: more players feeding the brazier means faster kills and more rolls per hour.
The Wintertodt fight
Wintertodt plays like a boss fight where the boss is the cold - feed the brazier, dodge the snow bursts, keep the pyromancers alive, and the fight ticks down on its own. The reward crates at the end roll logs, herbs, ores, and the pyromancer set pieces.
It is the only skilling boss that drops real money - a Wintertodt grind at 50+ firemaking is a full account's supply chain in one activity.
